and short explanation of Windows vs macOS etc behaviour when it comes to role="application"

valid example: custom control button that can be repositioned using cursor keys (e.g. BB reorder/rearrange). needs custom live region to announce what's going on too. role="application" needed as otherwise cursor keys move virtual / reading focus.
