UI Search Box Confusion

One of our users reported persistent problems with the searching of authority files. Only after much head-scratching did we realise that they were trying to use the magnifying glass icon as a search button. We are able to initiate a search only by hitting the [Return] key while focus is on the search box. Is that the intended behaviour?
