Describe the problem you would like to solve
Journals that want to increase the integrity of their peer review process may seek to use ORCID authentication to check and demonstrate that their reviewers have the appropriate qualifications to review (see #7404). However, reviewers aren't typically asked to authenticate their ORCID as a normal part of the reviewer workflow. That means few reviewers will be authenticated in most cases.

Describe the solution you'd like
Prompt reviewers to authenticate their ORCID earlier in the process. This could occur during one or both of the following events:

  • A new reviewer is registered.
  • A new review assignment is created.

I think an email sent to the reviewer with a link that takes them to a simple ORCID authentication workflow would be appropriate here. Once a reviewer is authenticated, no further emails are necessary.

Because some journals may wish to have a large pool of reviewers, a journal may need to configure the email prompt to be sent only when they are assigned, rather than when they are created.

The review assignment UI should also indicate if the reviewer has authenticated their ORCID, so that assigning editors can be encouraged to select authenticated reviewers.

Who is asking for this feature?
Journals that struggle with the perception of being predatory or low-quality. This is part of the Integrity Initiative project led by @willinsky
