Seeing targeted bogus traffic to my site's Plausible endpoint; any similar experiences?

Since the start of March, I've been seeing a significant amount of fake traffic to my personal homepage's Plausible events endpoint (/api/event). It has increased over time to the point where it now makes up a significant chunk of my site's total traffic on Plausible.

I wrote up a post going over the details of my investigation, but here are the headlines:

• I'm seeing a lot of fake traffic getting submitted to my Plausible analytics for one of my websites
• All of the requests are to the homepage, bounce immediately, and have no referrer/source listed
• The requests all come from unique residential-looking IPs
• The requests all have similar but randomized user agents
• There's no other requests or traffic to other pages or content from any of these IPs whatsoever; they all just hit the Plausible event submission endpoint a single time each

To be clear, I don't think this is an issue with Plausible; I'm just very curious as to where this fake traffic is coming from and why they've chosen to send it my way. It's very unlike other bot traffic I've seen in the past (they're not scraping any actual site content, the requests come from residential IPs, and other weird stuff).

If anyone has experienced anything similar or has an idea what's going on here, I'd be very eager to hear!
