Actually I tested and it is not possible.

Nevertheless, I don't get why. Is d3.js version hacked by the dimple team?

It isn't hacked but we do get pretty deep with some of the SVG stuff, particularly around object measuring. I'm not sure how complete R2D3's coverage is but I don't think it covers everything possible. Regardless, dimple's own code is not supported by older browsers so I'm afraid R2D3 wouldn't help anyway.
