Feature Scope
When there is interactive content in a digital pressbooks, and it is exported in other formats, it might be useful to have a QR code displayed in the print version instead of just the text.
OpenStax does this well in it's print texts where they both have a QR code and insert their logo. They do this only for their printed books. They seem to also split their PDFs between PDFs for digital distribution and PDFs for Printing. The PDFs for digital distribution have a simple link to be clicked. The print textbooks have these stylized QR codes inserted.
Digital PDF
PDF for print has the Openstax logo replaced with this QR code so they take up the same amount of space on the page.
Feature Description
When there are interactive elements in a PDF for print, links are not useful, especially if instructors are being trained to using best practices in ADA accessibility and using descriptive links instead of raw URLs.
Pressbooks has worked hard to have graceful fallbacks, and while links to the original content work great for PDFs for digital distribution or webbooks formats, having a QR code might be the best for when texts are printed.
Feature Use Case
I'm thinking especially of users who prefer physical books compared to online texts in higher ed.
