Handling Assessments and Sign offs

Professor Colin Turner edited this page Sep 18, 2018 · 2 revisions

WAM contains code that allows coursework and examinations to be uploaded and signed off by various stakeholders. This provides some documentation on how to achieve this.

There is a screencast showing some of the Assessment features on YouTube.

The Modules Index

If you click on the Modules tab on the menu bar you will see the index of modules for the Work Package you are working in. You may want to just check that the Work Package shown at the top is correct. WAM will warn you if the package you are working in is in the future or the past, which may suggest you need to update it.

The modules index will show the Module Code, the Module Title and then the "relationship" and "most recent assessment status".

The relationship field shows your relationship with the module, whether you are the module coordinator, a moderator, a member of the teaching team. It will also show you if you are an external examiner for that module or the "lead" external examiner.

External Examiners will see all modules in their Work Package, mostly for context for their work, but will only be able to interact signing off assessments with modules for which they are a specified examiner. As modules can fall under the purview of more than one examiner, there should always be a "lead" external for each module. These are the modules that this examiner should primarily focus on, since others are for information in that another examiner has been allocated that as "lead".

The most recent assessment status will show you the most recent "sign-off". More on those in a moment. Clicking on details will take you to the full information for the module.

The Details view

As well as workload information, the details view will show you any Assessment History for the module and allow you to add to that.

Initially, staff should upload exams and coursework information. Many users can upload files, but few can download them.

Uploading Resources (Files)

When you upload resources, you will be prompted a name, any brief details and a type. Try to make these self explanatory. If you are uploading a corrected exam paper, use this in the name field. The allowable types are configurable by your admin.

Downloading / viewing Resources (Files)

The following staff can view / download resources:

  • The module coordinator;
  • Members of the teaching team for that module;
  • Moderator(s) for that module;
  • The member of staff who uploaded the resource;
  • Designated members of staff charged with working with assessments in the package;
  • An external examiner who is examines programmes which this module is part of.

Deleting Resources (Files)

It is not normally possible to delete resources since WAM is serving as an audit system. However, it is possible for the uploader or coordinator to delete items up to and including them being "signed off". See below. After this, only your site admin can delete a file.

Signing Off

At various points in the assessment stage you will be required to sign off that your stage is complete. The precise stages are configurable by your site admin, and also depend on your relationship to the module.

For instance, it is typically the case that the Module Coordinator alone can sign off an initial submission of coursework and/or examinations, and then that a Moderator can decide whether to progress these or ask for revisions.

Please do not be concerned about requesting changes and making revisions. The whole point is to improve the quality of assessments for all stakeholders.

At various stages, it is possible to upload new resources relevant to the current stage and then sign off.

WAM will notify appropriate stakeholders by email about these sign-off events. For instance, typically a Moderator will receive an email to inform colleagues that you have completed initial submission and you are awaiting their moderation and comments.
