IT could be considered an exclusive term (even differentiating from design, dev, ops, etc.) and other work forces may be experiencing the same problems.

As a result, I've begun genericizing the terminology to be more industry-inclusive. I'd also like to make sure specific IT-related keywords are included for search and other purposes.

Can you explain more what you mean by "IT related keywords are included for search and other purposes"? You mean for SEO or..?

SEO, partially. I also didn't want to completely divorce the site from IT, as that may lessen how well it resonates with our peers.

Being specific to a profession in the site description and examples seemed like the wrong thing to do, but it's also one of the reasons why it has been of use so far.

I'm definitely open to your thoughts on this. In general, I haven't been able to dedicate the time required to fully revise/unify the topics and points. I'd like to make sure we progress in the right direction.
