Since you keep a reference to the toot being posted to Twitter, as replies to ns up on Twitter, but would that same source be used to crossrefence if a retweet needs to be boosted/retooted instead?

At the moment it just wraps the tweet and places it as a new message on the toot time-line, linking to the crossposted tweet.

If this (local/known) reference is not found in the instance, you just use the current behaviour of wrapping a new message.

Hi, @gbraad! I think this is close to what #533 suggests, but the other way around, is that it?
I haven't had the time to work on new features of the crossposter lately. I'm open to contributions, but I probably won't have the time to check this myself.

Looks close. I might have a look at some point. Has been on my mind for some time.
