This might be a permissions issue. not sure. i did install in the standard way.

m trash status yields, despite containing lots of files of various types:

Size: 0B
Number of files: 0

Is there some test I could do to help figure out the issue?

EDIT

OK, got the answer! It's a Gatekeeper permissions issue: the terminal emulator must have Full Disk Access.
