Lots of enterprise folks have auto mounted $HOME directories that follow them from OS to OS. This mechanism allows them to have the sam $HOME when logging in to OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, etc.

So, when switching OSes it is important to include ARCH and OS to differentiate them and build/install the proper Ruby and proper Gems for their architecture.
