When I try to reassign < and >, keyd only considers the buttons located at , and . and not the buttons located at the left of my z key.

102nd is the name keyd uses for that key (next to z), i just reassigned it to a be a layer key:
102nd = layer(bud) [bud] h = left j = down k = up l = right
