UPDATE: It is possible to install Sandstorm also to Ubuntu 24.04: This is how to get Sandstorm working at Ubuntu 24.04: https://groups.google.com/g/sandstorm-dev/c/4JFhr7B7QZU

So with this, installing to both Debian amd64 and Ubuntu amd64 works.

Hi,
how to fix my Sandcats server, get grains opening again, get websites back online?

Grains don't open anymore

Websites have CloudFlare error 520

The Cloudflare account in question would be the Sandcats one here I imagine, not yours. Has something recently changed with your server or was it working recently?

Can you get to the admin panel for SSL/TLS configuration and validate if it is renewing the certificate?

@ocdtrekkie

Yes, I can get to admin panel, but currently I'm in progress of moving nameservers from CloudFlare to Namecheap FreeDNS, because something suddenly changed at CloudFlare, I can not get CloudFlare nameservers working at all. I'll look at admin panel SSL/TLS after moving nameservers is done.

At CloudFlare was some sudden changes, SSL/TLS stopped working at many domains.

I don't understand how that would be possible. Sandcats' domain (and name servers) are handled by Kenton. If you have a Sandcats configuration you would not be able to change those.

@ocdtrekkie

No, I'm not changing sandcats domain.

I have websites at Sandstorm, made with WordPress and Hacker CMS, for each website have nameservers, that now I'm moving from CloudFlare to Namecheap FreeDNS.

Hmm, I think, I'll just figure it out. Nevermind.

But that wouldn't cause the screenshot above. I think something is off with your server's Sandcats and that could cause web publishing to also not work.

You probably don't want to move web publishing away from Cloudflare because you lose all of the CDN benefits.

Current Sandstorm log

Does this log have anything that would show why this happens?

debug-sandstorm.log

Current Sandstorm install

When trying to open grain, or create new grain, I still have that above "Secure Connection Failed" error.

Reinstall of same Sandcats subdomain

When reinstalling Sandstorm, recovering original .sandcards.io subdomain name, trying to create first new grain, I still have that above "Secure Connection Failed" error. Also, when installing Sandstorm, it did not install all default apps, I had to install some apps myself, and when installing, it did also mention some error, but did install app anyway.

Installing new Sandcats subdomain

When trying to install Sandstorm with new .sandcards.io subdomain name, it does not get Let's Encrypt certificate.

Trying older backup

I did also try older backup of /opt/sandstorm directory, it has same "Secure Connection Failed" error.

What are you seeing in the SSL/TLS Certificates admin panel?

@ocdtrekkie

When I clicked some button to renew Let's Encrypt certificates, some of the certificates for some static websites of my domains did not renew.

I did previously backup my Sandstorm install of /opt/sandstorm , and deleted it. Now I installed Sandstorm again, recovered my sandcats.io subdomain, and default grains were installed this time. Now I'm again seeing that "Secure Connection Failed" error, screenshot at first comment of this issue. This error comes always when trying to open grain. I tried to create new grains with all default installed apps, got same error:

  • Collections
  • Davros
  • Etherpad
  • Rocket.Chat
  • Wekan

Problem is, I always get that error "Secure Connection Failed". I can not open any grain successfully. Always same error. On new install of Sandstorm, creating new grains. Nothing old.

Currently I'm reinstalling server, to have clean install of Ubuntu. Maybe server is somehow messed up.

I'll try installing Sandstorm after that, to see, does it work.

Currently I have most of those Sandstorm hosted static websites online elsewhere, so they are not down anymore. But there is no web UI editor like Sandstorm WordPress and Hacker CMS when hosting only static websites.

After installing Ubuntu 22.04, updating to 24.04 (changed all to noble at /etc/apt/sources.list , apt dist-upgrade, reboot), and then installing Sandstorm, I now again get "Secure Connection Failed". Is Sandstorm not compatible with Ubuntu 24.04 ?

Ok, I have tried too many times. Sorry.

It would only contain this error code: E_FETCH_CERTIFICATE [yes]

Sandstorm makes it easy to run web apps on your own server. You can have:

1. A typical install, to use Sandstorm (press enter to accept this default)
2. A development server, for working on Sandstorm itself or localhost-based app development

How are you going to use this Sandstorm install? [1] 2
If you want app developer mode for a Sandstorm install, you need root
due to limitations in the Linux kernel.

To set up Sandstorm, we will use sudo to switch to root, then
provide further information before doing the install.
Sandstorm's database and web interface won't run as root.
OK to continue? [yes]
Re-running script as root...
Sandstorm makes it easy to run web apps on your own server. We're going to:

* Install Sandstorm in /opt/sandstorm.
* Automatically keep Sandstorm up-to-date (with signed updates).
* Create a service user (sandstorm) that owns Sandstorm's files.
* Add you (wekan) to the sandstorm group so you can read/write app data.
* Expose the service only on localhost aka local.sandstorm.io, not the public Internet.
* Enable 'dev accounts', for easy developer login.
* Configure Sandstorm to start on system boot (with systemd).
* Listen for inbound email on port 30025.

Press enter to accept defaults. Type 'no' to customize. [yes]
Note: Sandstorm's storage will only be accessible to the group 'sandstorm'.

Config written to /opt/sandstorm/sandstorm.conf.

NOTE: Use the passwordless admin account called Alice for convenient dev login (since you have 'dev accounts' enabled).

To learn how to control the server, run:
  sandstorm help

Then at http://local.sandstorm.io:6080 I installed WeKan, and got this error:

sandstorm-error

Translated to English that text is:

The connection was interrupted
The connection to the server was initialized in the middle of the download.
The site may be temporarily unavailable or under heavy load. Please try again in a while.
If none of the sites work, check your computer's network settings.
If the computer or network is protected by a firewall or a proxy server is in use, check that Firefox's network connection is not blocked.

This is what kernel I'm running:

wekan@b:~/repos/wekan$ uname -a
Linux b 6.8.0-31-generic #31-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sat Apr 20 00:40:06 UTC 2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
wekan@b:~/repos/wekan$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS \n \l

So, maybe Ubuntu 24.04 is the problem?

Are you trying to install a production Sandstorm to host websites or one to run app dev? Because one installed in dev mode should never be connected to Sandcats.

Not positive on Ubuntu 24, I generally use Debian versions currently.

I sort of wonder if we could set up a call time or something to work on getting your issues squared away.

@ocdtrekkie

I installed Sandstorm in dev move, not connected to Sandcats, to Ubuntu 24.04. New install.

Next I will install Debian 12, to see does Sandstorm work there.

If someone likes to help, the question is, can you install Ubuntu 24.04 amd64, and then use Sandstorm installer at https://sandstorm.org/install ? Does installing with option 1 production, or option 2 dev, work for you? Can you install app and open any grain?

Because I have tried at server for 1 production, and at home laptop with option 2 dev, at Ubuntu 24.04, and opening any grain shows that error to me.

If Sandstorm install does not work on Ubuntu, then at webpage https://sandstorm.org/install text should be changed from Ubuntu to Debian.

Ok, Sandstorm works at Debian 12 amd64. Not at Ubuntu 24.04 amd64. Please change text at webpage https://sandstorm.org/install from Ubuntu to Debian 12.

We'll have to do some more testing but I'll probably change the website anyways, I think Debian is probably a bit better performance-wise and Sandstorm installs are unlikely to need or want Ubuntu GUI features anyways.
