Some leads :

wrap any push_back() operation on the container in a method like pushIfPossible() that checks the bufferPairState first
test/refurbish the complete mode, which was written before the pair model was introduced and may well be entirely broken now
better naming : for instance, bufferSet could be currentSet, and inputSet could be nextSet
... (I'm sure we can find lots more as we come back to it)
