I investigated the Git LFS situation related to SHIP-0036: Proposal to set runAs user/group for supporting steps to the runAs configuration of the build strategy steps #131. The reason why go-git does not support lfs is that git-lfs, which is a Go module, does not provide a stable Go API. Also, under the cover, git-lfs calls the git binary. Some investigations in that area: cirruslabs/cirrus-ci-agent#262 (comment)

Imo there is no way today to get this working without using the git binary.

Had not yet time to update the ship, though.
