va and vp on same line not being populated correctly

Here is the line: v 1 \va 2\va* and more text \vp 1 (2)\vp* Chapter 3 verse 1.
If I replace the string, I get: \v 1 \va 2\va*Updating later in the book to start.
Why is the vp removed, but the va stays? What is the correct behavior?
