When an asset is checked out, it by definition means it's assigned to a user, which is why it's tied to that user's location.

OK, but we have users who maintain two offices in separate physical locations. They have equipment assigned to them in both (IP phones for starters, but monitors, docking stations, etc would also fall into this).

There's also the question of servers; servers don't have an "owner", at least not in our org unit. Even if we stretched and assigned them one based on their use/purpose, we have servers at a Colo, a remote facility, etc., network gear too.

The location model (as it is currently) breaks down in all but the simplest cases. But that's more or less outside the scope of this pull request and probably not going to get solved by this :)
