  • 2009: The first Bitcoin block is mined, Block 0. This is also known as the "genesis block" and contains the text: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks." Investopedia.

  • 2009: The first version of the Bitcoin software is announced on The Cryptography Mailing list. Investopedia.

  • 2009: Block 1 is mined, and Bitcoin mining commences in earnest. Investopedia.

  • 2009: The first Bitcoin transaction took place when Satoshi Nakamoto sent 10 BTC to Hal Finney. Blockchain.com.

  • 2014: After a Newsweek article suggests Dorian Nakamoto is the creator of Bitcoin, journalists camp outside his house and then chase him down the highway when one of them takes him out for sushi lunch. The Verge.

  • 2020: Third Bitcoin halving. Block reward drops from 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC. Bitcoin Wiki.

  • 2010: Florida programmer and BitcoinTalk user Laszlo Hanyecz offers to pay 10,000 bitcoins for 2 pizzas. Someone in the U.K. takes him up on it, orders two pizzas from Papa John's in Hanyecz’s area, pays $25 for them, and gets the 10,000 bitcoins in exchange. This transaction marks the first real world transaction/purchase used with Bitcoin. It is now known as Bitcoin Pizza Day. Bitcointalk.org.
