It seems as though this will only work if the coded image is "image.png" and there is a @2x image on server.

What about if I want to serve @2x by default in some parts of my site?

Is there any way to make this work?

Just serve the @2x version as the regular version of the image, so image.jpg instead of image@2x.jpg then it'll just load in that version. If you're going to serve it by default it doesn't make sense to save out two versions of the image.
