Hi, I'm Steven Yuan 👋

I'm a software engineer interested in programming languages, compilers, code generation, and cross-language communication. I especially enjoy working on the layers between APIs, languages, runtimes, and the developers who use them.

Previously, I was a Software Engineer II and open-source maintainer at AWS (@aws, @awslabs), where I worked on Smithy, an open-source API modeling language and code-generation toolchain.

What I Work On

I like building tools and systems that make software development easier:

  • Programming Languages & Code Generation — API modeling, serialization, compilers, code generators, and generated clients
  • SDKs & Cross-Language Systems — tools that connect APIs, languages, and runtimes
  • Developer Infrastructure — build systems, testing, CI/CD, and developer tooling
  • Distributed Systems — event-driven architectures, scalability, fault tolerance, and observability
  • Cloud Infrastructure — AWS, serverless architectures, and cloud-native systems
