As mentioned in this comment the current ac repository does not contain the download available at http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638/. I have just imported that information in this branch: https://github.com/tdwg/ac/tree/archive. Please review (and edit) it before I create an archive (= release of it).

  • Is README ok?
  • I've also unpacked the zip, but maybe that is not necessary
  • Should there be a preferred citation for this document?
  • Should this information be merged into the master branch or should it remain an orphan?

Note: Ignore the yellow banner on the repo homepage: do not create a pull request (for now).

Once I have the go ahead from the @ac team, I'll:

  1. Create a release
  2. Remove the archive branch so it doesn't confuse anyone, unless we merge it first
  3. Notify @baskaufs to reference the release in the README on master

In the near future, http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638/ will then redirect to https://github.com/tdwg/ac, where users will be see the README and the link to the archived version.

@ramorrismorris your call on this one. I invented a citation for the Standards Documentation Standard in this comment - how should the preferred citation for AC look?

Hmm. As to citation, the closest thing to an author set is the list of 12 Contributors listed on the normative documents. In that case, following your example would be

Morris, Robert A., et al., 2014. Audubon Core Multimedia Resources Metadata Schema, Release 1.0, http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638/

All that said, there are several normative and several non-normative documents forming part of the standard. Is it enough to leave the links to those in the content of http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638/ ? Or might one have the following, the "See also" of which points to pretty much everything. (This might come down to this question: are we trying to make a citation of the standard or a citation of the documents that define it. )

Morris, Robert A., et al., 2014. Audubon Core Multimedia Resources Metadata Schema, Release 1.0, http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638/. See also http://terms.tdwg.org/wiki/Audubon_Core.

@ramorrismorris, following the now decided standard preferred citation, the one for the archived AC would become:

Morris Robert A., Barve Vijay, Carausu Mihail, Chavan Vishwas, Cuadra Jose, Freeland Chris, Hagedorn Gregor, Leary Patrick, Mozzherin Dimitry, Olson Annette, Riccardi Greg, Teage Ivan. 2014. Audubon Core Multimedia Resources Metadata Schema, Version 1.0. Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG) http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638

@PeterDesmond Hmmm. Simple answer to first bullet: 2013 is actually defensible. This looks a little tangled over the change of the wiki URL from [1] to [2]. The ultimate document, [2] carries a line saying

"Release 1.0 of this document has wiki revision 10759 with a permalink http://terms.gbif.org/w/index.php?oldid=10759"

Similar issues occur for the other "Type1" document [3], [4]

Thus: the standard was approved in 2014 based upon normative wiki documents published in 2013. The move to github seems to give plenty of opportunity to warn about this issue,
The date of that 10759 document is 2013 and it is that one that was submitted to and approved by TDWG in 2014. In the present http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638, the Download link appropriately downloads (a version of) the wiki document with persistent id and the page seems to claim the Download link was set in 2013.

I will edit the github README and hope that Steve has time to examine its appropriateness. Then I will think about @peterdesmet's final bullet.

Getting caught up on this... It doesn't look like the README has been edited yet, right? Or am I looking at the wrong thing.

If the permanent http://www.tdwg.org/standards/638 URL is going to redirect to https://github.com/tdwg/ac, then I'd leave the permanent URL in the citation. That allows for redirection at some point in the future to something other than https://github.com/tdwg/ac without breaking the link given in a citation somewhere. Kind of a PURL approach...

Hi @baskaufs and @ramorrismorris, trying to pick this up again. The first thing I'd like to do is finish the release of the standard as it appeared on the TDWG website: http://ww1.tdwg.org/standards/638. Note: that is different from creating a release of the current version of the standard.

For that, you'll need to review (and maybe edit) this README (in the archive branch): https://github.com/tdwg/ac/tree/archive, especially the dates, preferred citation and any missing links.

Since the preferred citation indicates this as version 1.0, that's how I'm planning to name the release. It's up to you to decide if that is correct, we can also release it as a pre-release.

As to version, my call is that it is named as @peterdesmet offers. If nobody objects by 0800Z Tuesday Dec 7 2015, it should be taken as accepted.

I wiill try to spend some time on the README this weekend or Monday

I reread the README and find it fine. I committed two trivial changes, adding a comma and lowercasing "Resource"

Thanks @ramorrismorris, the release has now been created: https://github.com/tdwg/ac/releases/tag/1.0 I have also deleted the archive branch to avoid confusion (all content is the release anyway). I'll leave it to you to update the README of the current version (in master), e.g. by adding a preferred citation.
