NO - but with a workaround.

It doesn't appear that this is possible without completely overriding a module. Perhaps Config Actions could help with this? It doesn't seem likely though.

One workaround is to simply hide the field in the form display. This way, even if the field is technically on a node, it won't appear for people to edit.
