####c. Understand what people need, by including people in the prototype development and design process Our Product Manager worked with representative set of consumers who purchase food, devices, and drugs that may be impacted by product recalls. The focus group reviewed the OpenFDA API data available during the inspiration phase of our human-centered design approach and determined that the product needed to increase consumer’s awareness of recalls distributed in their geographical area of interest. The User Interface (UI) needed to be innovative and easy to use while delivering valuable public safety information. The focus group was not part of the delivery team. We started off with a visioneering whiteboard session of ideas for the data and then sketched screen designs and flows on the whiteboard to see what was possible. The team requested the product features should include:

  1. Ability to filter data
  2. Geographical representation of product distribution areas
  3. Ability to link geographical map to product summary recall data
  4. Ability to drill down to specific product recall events
  • Whiteboard - brainstorming session of possible product ideas using the OpenFDA APIs Evidence-C-1

  • Whiteboard – sketch of UI based on requirements Product Manager gathered from user group Evidence-C-2

Next our UI design expert sketched the layouts and visual representation of our application while sitting with the Product Manager. Actionable software was created and the user group evaluated it and provided feedback. This was an iterative process as we narrowed in on a responsive form factor that created an intuitive and valuable interface of the data. The Product Manager provided live demonstration to the user group and then had them independently use the prototype. The Product Manager conducted live interviews and solicited electronic feedback from the consumer group to refine the product further to better meet the product goals. As a result, the final prototype successfully enabled users to easily navigate and filter results to get information about product recalls distributed in their area of interest.

  • Product Manager meeting with end users to gather feedback on the prototypes Evidence-C-3

  • Email sent to users announcing the start of the user acceptance testing to get feedback Evidence-C-4
