There is an inconsistency in terminology between the HTML Popover API, which uses "popover", and the existing ARIA attribute aria-haspopup, which utilizes "popup". This discrepancy might create confusion for authors. Hence, I propose adding aria-haspopover as an alias to aria-haspopup.

Proposal to add aria-haspopover
Proposal: Introducing aria-haspopover as an alias for aria-haspopup
Feb 19, 2024
The problem with this proposal is that it would suggest that authors need to use aria-haspopup for all instances of popovers, which is not the case. Rather aria-haspopup is only really needed for a few use cases, and even then it is arguably unnecessary/ redundant when also exposing an aria-expanded state (as popovers do automatically)
