The term "Compose" feels a bit too specific to me as a "common purpose" for "creating things":

Compose - Create a new item (e.g. an email, online document, etc.)

The reason it feels wrong is that it does not apply to more trivial "Create a new thing" tasks, such as "Create a new folder" (i.e. one does not "Compose" a folder, one simply "Creates" it).

I think the word "New" covers more ground (New folder, New file, New task, New contact, New email, New online document), and it also leverages the desktop "New" menu item concept, which has been around since the dawn of GUIs, so its purpose is very well known by now.

(Official WG response)
The wording has been significantly updated, we think this addresses the issue, it no longer includes the buttons aspect.
