Tried everything (even updating the Bash version to 4.4) but cannot get this script to work. Any ideas how I can adapt the script to macOS?

Hi @Driesje32. I currently don't have access to a macOS-based device, so it's unlikely that I'll be able to help any time soon. What error messages are you getting ? If none, or not useful, please add set -x in the second line of the script and post the log from its execution.

One thing that's certainly missing on macOS is systemd, but that's not a mandatory requirement to use openvpn-unroot. Otherwise I don't know what else is there and what isn't.

If I get my hands on a mac, I'll take a look, but I can't tell when that might happen. You can try to follow the manual steps from the OpenVPN wiki, though at least some of it will not apply on macOS. With Apple products being so popular these days, you might be able to find people who have already solved the problem of running OpenVPN without root privileges on that system - it's worth asking around.
