Flow - Submission to TeenHacks 2021

💡 Inspiration

Many people have seen decreases in their productivity throughout the pandemic. Staring at a computer screen for hours can become boring and demotivating. People lose focus from their important tasks and are unable to relieve any stress from work. Additionally, since many people are at home, they feel that if they are not busy constantly, then they are wasting precious time. These factors can create an unhealthy atmosphere that increases stress and negatively impacts a person's mental health. Our app aims to help individuals focus on their tasks while also providing them with outlets for stress relief. Furthermore, we believe that talking about your problems is an effective method of alleviating stress and removing mental burdens. Thus, we integrated an AI therapist in our app that can help users talk about their problems and figure out solutions that can improve their situation.

💻 What it does

Flow provides its users with a virtual study space, AI therapist, and several stress-relieving activities. With the virtual study space, you can use a timer to set a studying routine (i.e. pomodoro technique), create a checklist and mark items off as you complete them, and use a music player to listen to our curated LoFi Hip-Hop playlists as you work. The GPT-3 AI therapist can provide consolation and advice based on the input provided. Our Take A Break page offers meditation soundtracks, a music player with LoFi Hip-Hop playlists, and a GIF searcher from GIPHY for when you're feeling overworked.

🛠 How We Built It

We used React, Flask, CSS, HTML, Firebase (for authentication), Cloudinary (asset storage), chakra-ui, and OpenAI to create this project. React.js was used for frontend, while Flask was used for the backend python server. Our authentication is extremely secure despite using SSO (Single Sign-On) authentication because of our use of Oauth-2.0. We made sure the auth token is only distributed on the frontend, to protect from Man-in-the-Middle hacks. Additionally, we used OpenAI's beta GPT3 model to create the chat therapy chatbot, which has been trained on over 570 gigabytes of text. Chakra-ui was used for styling, and Particles.js was used for enhanced visual effects. We also integrated the GIPHY API on our React frontend for the "Take a Break" page.

🛑 Challenges we ran into

Our greatest challenge was using the various APIs and libraries utilized by this project. Most of us did not have any experience working with OpenAI or React so it took a bit of messing around before we could properly implement them into our project. One of the hardest parts was understanding and designing every component of the React code, and implementing the correct modules necessary for them to work correctly. Furthermore, integrating the OpenAI GPT-3 API into our backend required us to research all of the NLP model parameters, which were a bit confusing initially. We also ran into a lot of challenges while building the timer since the interaction between the timer buttons had many bugs. We're happy that we were able to overcome these challenges in such a short time and deliver an amazing product.

✅ Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're particularly proud of the ingenuity of our idea and how our app improves mental health, something that is vital to one's well-being and success. While there have been many mental health-focused apps created, Flow distinguishes itself by placing an emphasis on productivity while giving its users many options with which they can unwind and recover from fatigue. By making an all-inclusive app that can really make a difference in the lives of people, we are extremely proud to say that we persisted through a lot of difficult technologies and learning curves of languages and integration to build a fully-functional app.

📚 What we learned

Through this project, we vastly improved our capabilities with React. Additionally, we learned more about the process of creating a web application. Going through the task of developing this app, we were also introduced to the various difficulties sending data between the frontend and the backend. We also learned more about the fundamentals of NLP technology and how we can integrate it into our applications using OpenAI. Finally, we also developed our teamwork skills and understood the importance of collaboration for an extensive project like Flow.

📈 What's next for Flow

We plan on continuing the development of Flow after this hackathon. Some future improvements could be developing a more refined front-end and adding a progress bar to the task list. Finally, we also plan to integrate more services and APIs such as a Spotify Web Player, which could improve the work and relaxation experience for users. We plan to add more features for boosting productivity and improving the relaxation platform by adding more options for stress-relief.
