Can the encoding scheme generalize to an ND scalar field? I.e. actually make use of locality in more dimensions than just X, Y?
In addition to #8 scalar precisions, if you want to support medical imaging, it would really need to handle 3D volumes. Ideally, it should generalize to ND arrays, i.e. anything you can represent in a normal numerical library. It should also support multiple channels at each grid location.
