About

Harvey is a distribution of Plan 9, based on the MIT-licensed release of the source code arranged by the Plan 9 Foundation, with patches applied from 9legacy. We're working toward a few primary goals:

  • Ease of development and deployment, including continuous integration and tools to help bootstrap you into Harvey from a Linux system.
  • Go-first development, because we like Go.
    • Go toolchain shipped in the distribution
    • Go applications included to replace and/or augment existing tools (e.g. edwood as an acme replacement).
  • Experiment with other integrations, such as linking Rust code into the kernel.
  • Eventually, bringing C code into ISO C compliance.

About the Name

So, why "Harvey"? Mostly because we liked it, but there are at least 3 other good reasons based on the origins of the Plan 9 operating system:

  1. Harvey is a movie, Plan 9 is a movie too.
  2. Harvey is a rabbit, Glenda is a bunny.
  3. Most importantly: in the movie, those who believed in Harvey were thought to be insane, but eventually found not to be.
