Challenge Statement:

Fishers and farmers often harvest seafood which does not conform to the principal demand of commercial buyers because it is of a different species, size or grade. To prevent food waste and aid food security, a marketplace is needed to connect consumers to supplies of extra harvest.

Background:

EPCIS is an information sharing standard for communicating object-level event data between trading partners. The standard defines what data should be captured and in which manner. The species which fishers harvest beyond the principally demanded species is often called, bycatch. Since farms have more control over the specimens reared, commercial buyers can be more specific in their demand and grade requirements. Even so, the growing of animals is a biological process which cannot be perfectly controlled leaving under & oversized specimens.

Possible Solution:

An effective solution will enable fishers and farmers to upload EPCIS events about the harvest and landing of their catch in order to market their extra harvest in a consumer-facing marketplace. The solution should seek ways to highlight the traceability of the product and the direct connection to fishers and farmers. Novel ways of highlighting sustainability data on the fishers, farmers and their harvest are appreciated as well as friendly designs that make the harvest attractive to consumer-buyers. An effective solution will help steer consumers to harvest which they may be unfamiliar with to reduce the likelihood of the catch going to waste. Emphasis of the solution should be on the multitude of harvests available for sale not on individual sellers. The solution could include a means of generating an EPCIS event of the sale and delivery of the seafood products for the records of the transporter and consumer. Strong solutions will make the marketing of extra harvest as seamless as possible for sellers through the use of EPCIS event structure.
