Localization

Localization (often abbreviated to "L10n" in computing contexts) of Wolvic refers to the ongoing process of adapting Wolvic for a specific region or language by translating text and adding locale-specific components.

Localization works for user interface, voice search, and text entry. It is provided by volunteers coordinated by Wolvic's core development team.

Wolvic officially supports these languages:

  • Danish (da)
  • English UK (en-GB)
  • English US (en-US)
  • European Spanish (es-ES)
  • French (fr)
  • Finnish (fi)
  • Galician (es-GL)
  • German (de)
  • Japanese (ja)
  • Korean (ko)
  • Russian (ru)
  • Simplified Chinese (zh-rCN)
  • Spanish (es)

There are other languages that are community supported, already partially supported from Firefox Reality, or being added at the moment:

  • Dutch (nl)
  • Italian (it)
  • Norwegian Bokmaal (nb-rNO)
  • Norwegian Nynorsk (nn-rNO)
  • Polish (pl)
  • Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR)
  • Portuguese (pt-PT)
  • Ukrainian (uk_UA)
  • Swedish (sv-rSE)
  • Traditional Chinese (zh-rTW)

These languages cannot currently be selected, but they may be added soon.

Contributing

Do you think support for your preferred language and script can be added or improved? You can directly contribute to this effort.

Wolvic uses Weblate, a Web-based localization service, where anyone can sign up for an account and start translating a multitude of projects, including Wolvic.

Wolvic default language is English (en_US). If you wish to translate Wolvic you should be able to translate English to any other language.

To help translate Wolvic, follow these steps:

  1. Head over to https://weblate.org and sign up for a free account.
  2. During the sign up process, or later from your profile page, list the language(s) you are able to translate English to.
  3. Follow the Wolvic project at Weblate (so that it appears in your Dashboard), and start translating!

If there are other ways you think you can contribute, please contact us at Wolvic.

How it works internally

Whenever a new string is added to a localizable strings file (strings.xml, localpages.xml, …) a string description must be provided as a comment above the new string. The new string will be picked up by owners of each language and a translation will eventually be provided.

Wolvic L10n builds on the internationalization ("i18n") provided by the Android operating system. The most visible user-facing component of this is the language and script used in the user interface. All user-facing strings of text used in Wolvic are gathered into a strings XML file and the contents of this file are translated between supported languages. We are currently defining a semi-automated process to handle these translations.
