This is the changelog for the HUD, going back to v1. All versions on GitHub now link to their release or commit, and all Edition names have been added as of 1/23/23, when I recovered the full archives of every HUD version. All known release dates are also listed.

Current release is at the top; KBNHud has had 116 releases to date.

KBNHud v515 - Optimist Edition (February 25, 2024)

  • Split the DemoUI button on the main menu to make one for DemoUI 2, allowing for better preference with users

  • Fixed MMPH and Gas Passer overlap

  • Fixed Competitive round counters being covered by KOTH timers, also generally neatened up their placement and alignments, as well as shrinking them to a much more reasonable size to fit neatly into the margins of both KOTH and CP modes

  • Fixed with prior GitHub merge: fixed war paint mouseover panel in inventory to not cut names off, thanks to impale1

KBNHud v514 - Supercell Edition (November 12, 2023)

  • Updated VSH HUD to use a custom health bar for Saxton Hale

NOTE: Hypnotize and m0rehud for the base VSH HUD file, techno on the HUDS.TF Discord for pointing me to resources, and to Squid Eevee on Gamebanana for sorting out the file locations to make this work, see their mod here.

  • Moved KOTH timers to an acceptable location to work in regular KOTH but also in the new cp_sulfur map with its three capture points and KOTH style D point

NOTE: No custom cp_sulfur D objective icon yet, as I have yet to locate the material sprite for it. Will update when I do.

  • Removed the bulk of the loading screen customization due to a recurring error of displaying that users had encountered VAC errors.
  • Added main menu quickstart button for a local server running tf_newbots next to the existing one for tr_walkway as well as a unique icon for the button.

  • Added the new form of the huds.tf link button, the Mastercomfig HUD DB link button. The teal one.

  • Changed tr_walkway main menu icon.

  • Overhauled loading screen dialog.

  • Removed unused closed caption variants.

  • Removed unused font files.

KBNHud v510 - Oulhin Edition (January 30, 2023)

  • Added stub 'huditemeffectmeter_action.res' to fix console errors.

  • Added band-aid fix for MvM HUD elements getting messed up by having minmode (competitive scoreboard) enabled in the form of large red text telling the user to click the relevant main menu button to fix.

  • Fixed console errors related to 'huditemeffectmeter.res' and 'huditemeffectmeter_killstreak.res'.

  • Removed a great many unused minmode flags, as minmode is only used for switching scoreboards in KBNHud.

  • Added two lines to chat_english.

  • Cleaned up chat_english.

  • Changed to new Menu Background to match updated banners.

  • Darkened Main Menu buttons to work better with the higher contrast background.

  • Removed all references and links to huds.tf due to the site sadly having to shut down.

  • Removed the file from v5 stating that HUD crosshairs have moved to the ^customizations folder from the scripts folder, as this should no longer be necessary after two years going by.

  • Added smaller size (7px) of the Maven Pro Medium font to facilitate the second fix below.

  • Fixed an error I made last April with v504 that caused the button to join a party's match to do nothing.

  • Fixed font sizes on the queue popup box.

  • Removed several unnecessary files.

  • Moved MvM currency counter to hudlayout to fix after the Decmber 6 game patch.

KBNHud is now 11 years old as of two days ago.

KBNHud v504 - Selig Edition (April 28, 2022)

  • Fixed inconsistencies with the Mann Co. Store tabs

  • Ironed out items clipping on the main menu, namely the Queue popup and other popups relating to party matches

Thanks to lozangle for helping fix two of the mentioned menu popups

ADDITIONS

  • Added more unique icons to the main menu, as too many had a similar look of three horizontal lines.

  • Added link buttons on the main menu that open the following in your default browser: KBNHud's GitHub repo, KBNHud's HUDS.TF site, and my own Discord server.

  • Added color customization for the dropshadows of the ammo counters

  • Added voice chat toggle to the main menu (this is a little iffy. It shuts off voice just fine but re-enabling it is a bit wonky)

  • Added transparent viewmodels customization at long last. Will work if you have the proper mods installed to enable it.

  • Added a button to the main menu that automatically launches a local server running tr_walkway_rc2 if the user has the map installed/downloaded

  • Added more abbreviations to chat_english.txt

CHANGES

  • Added two commented lines to the hitmarkers animations file (/custom/kbnhud/scripts/animations/hitmarkers.txt), which when uncommented, cause the HUD crosshairs to blink as hitmarkers in place of separate ones. (For Malik794)

  • Updated class selection to display class limits as a fractional; eg. before it would say 2(3), now it will say 2/3. X meant either full or that that class was not allowed; full will say 3/3, and if the class is banned, it will say 'Banned'. (Thanks Uncletopia)

  • Changed queue popup to have expanded exit/manage button at the bottom of the popup, this is to prevent interference with the KBNHud button.

  • Overhauled the customizations (again) in order to make the HUD compatible with the TF2 HUD Editor, the spiritual successor to the failed multi-installer from over half a decade ago. This requires a simplified customizations folder. To combat any confusion, I finally made a complete Wiki on the GitHub repo page, and an .html file in ^customizations links to this index with screenshots and instructions for those not using the Editor. (#IF CONFUSED, CLICK THIS#.html)

  • As part of the above, I changed the 4x3 fixes to an uncommentable. In the ^customizations/#resolutions folder, 16x9 is uncommented, and _4x3 is commented. By changing them to _16x9 and 4x3, the menus will be changed to fit on non-widescreen aspect ratios.

  • Disabled the team colored bar under player health by default instead of it being enabled by default. The customization that hid it before now activates it: player_health_teamcolor_hudplayerhealth.res

  • Made the damage indicators that show where you were hit from less obtrusive (Thanks Horse)

  • Changed the default HUD crosshair color to bright green (0 255 0 255)

  • Changed default damage numbers/metal spent color to fuschia (255 0 255 255)

  • Changed low health and low ammo blink #2 colors to be more different from the initial #1 blink colors, this makes being at low health or low on ammo much more obvious and eye-catching

  • Changed destroy menu to no longer use icons, merely say "Destroy (building)" in red text, this allowed me to bring the vertical height of the destroy menu down to match the footprint of the build menu, because I'm obsessive like that.

  • Changed build menu to use the same metal color as the main indicator when able to build a building. It still displays red when you're short on metal.

  • Updated Player Destruction elements to fit the general styling of objective displays

  • Reverted back to older, non-centered TargetID due to numerous unfixable issues with centered TargetID. This also allows health to be displayed in disguise status, and for floating health to function. Rejoice, MvM players. Added a dropshadow to the text displaying the name of who/what you are looking at to improve general visibility versus the version found in v5.

  • Changed Fighter Pilot Crosshairs to a single, universal file that works no matter what aspect ratio and resolution you are using. (about damn time) This was done to simplify and un-cramp the KBNHud page in the HUD Editor. It also allows for simplifying the associated Wiki page for the HUD and greater ease of use for less experienced users.

FIXES

  • Fixed remaining issues with the symbol fonts used for the menus in Linux. Also renamed the symbol font file to match kbn as it is "custom" enough for me to be good with calling it my own.

  • Fixed inconsistencies with kerning of the HUD crosshairs in Linux. I feel this is prudent given the coming advent of the Steam Deck. Some were working out of the box, but very few. Most were very much out of alignment as compared to when the HUD is run in Windows, and impossible to align with xpos and ypos. Pushed these changes to the core version of Hypnotize's crosshairs pack on GitHub for all to use.

  • Fixed inconsistencies with Demoman charge meters

  • Fixed main menu background being blurry at low settings

  • Fixed MvM Upgrades summary not showing for selected item

  • Fixed the popup for healing and damage not moving with KNEdit mode

  • Fixed several halloween things

  • Fixed Hitmarkers not actually being disabled (Hotfix 1)

KBNHud v501 - Arlington Edition (December 29, 2020)

  • Added the "Call Vote" button back to the main menu after I removed it during the final rework of the menu, and subsquently forgot to add it back before releasing v5. Sorry about that!

  • Fixed issues with symbol and low weight fonts between Linux and Windows; KBN is authored in Linux and as such, I had it configured for Linux's janky font system. I have added flags for the game to use different files between both versions and separate size and weight for certain fonts. - b2_r2 (linux), b2_r3 (OSX)

  • Fixed map voting panel on the end of round screen - b1_rc2

  • Post-mortem freezeframe not showing data properly on first death after joining game/server, works on second death
  • Updated main menu with Scream Fortress XII promotions

KBNHud v449 - No Future Edition (September 1, 2020)

  • Added customizations for the Uberchage display that move the percentage and vaccinator count below the crosshair a la MrSlin's HUD, and another that hides the charge meter for both types of medigun

  • Changed HUD Crosshairs to use cs style placement, which allows for decimal control of location for better accuracy

  • Moved MvM currency counters to the opposide end of the main HUD to make room for the fixed status effect icons

  • Fixed v448 payload icons not loading properly, updated main menu for the summer crate and key

  • Fixed two crosshair fonts having non-matching names in clientscheme

  • Fixed display of status effects and buffs, shrunken but still easily visible, now below player health

KBNHud v444 - Shi Edition (November 5, 2018)

  • Added override to enable the maximum health indicator to the main player health element

  • Shifted killstreak counter and damage popup to not overlap max health indicator

  • Changed all weapon kill count meters to right side justification to match killstreak counter's left side justification and aligned them with the particular class' ammo counters

  • Moved MvM money display to below health indicator

  • Moved MvM remaining money display to above and to thr right of the main money display

  • Moved the Halloween spells counter to the right of ammo and shrank the overall element

KBNHud v443 - Zehn Edition (October 20, 2018)

  • Changed to Halloween 2018 promos

KBNHud v442 - LX5 Edition (September 19, 2018)

  • Fixed store stamp popup

September quarterly check, nothing new, just a fix for something annoying, thanks CriticalFlaw. Next update will more than likely be next month for the Halloween event.

  • Changed all but one customization option to use the #base system, so installation of overrides is simpler than it ever has been since the HUD was released.

  • HUD crosshairs are now in a similar state as the customizations, though not exactly so. Fighter pilot crosshairs are packed with the other drag and drop customizations, but the KONR wings and other HUD crosshairs are now controlled from the "crosshairs_hudlayout.res" file in the scripts folder.

  • Changed main HUD folder to all lowercase lettering for total linux compatibility.

  • Changed all files relating to the #base system to use consistent naming scheme

  • Fixed consistency errors in readme files

  • Moved new killstreak counter to sit above health after realizing it clips with ubercharge meter.

  • Changed the Revenge Crits/Diamondback crits/Manmelter crits to use the new icons and placed it above the ammo counter

  • Increased kill feed font size by 2 to compensate for thinner lettering

  • Changed all file names to lowercase so the HUD can function in linux

  • Fixed the size and placement of the Demoman shield charge meter to be consistent with the sticky charge meter.

  • Fixed placement of "MMPH" meter

  • Fixed health gained popup to be above the player health at all resolutions

  • Minor updates to comply with small HUD changes made since last KBNHUD version

  • Removed an excess font file

NOTE: Starting in September of this year, I will be doing checks to see if the HUD needs updating every three months. If it needs updating, I will do so. The exceptions are any major patches and holiday patches, which will warrant an update ASAP.

  • Changed killfeed font for better legibility at low resolutions

  • Changed killstreak counter to use an icon instead of a text label to make it more compact, moved to below ammo counter

  • Changed Bazaar Bargain/Eyelander/Air Strike counter to use an icon instead of a text label to make it more compact, moved to top of ammo counter

  • Shifted metal counter to just below the crosshair, given the popularity of this placement

  • Shifted sticky counter to just below the crosshair, same reason as for the metal counter

  • Moved main TargetID down to allow metal counter and sticky counter some breathing space

  • HUD now uses split animation files to simplify future updates, with all custom KBNHud animations being in "HudAnimations_custom.txt," and any new animations VALVe adds will not break the HUD

  • Fixed longtime issue of demoman sticky counter showing random text, by way of removing the counter when no stickies are present

  • Fixed Sticky launcher/Huntsman charge meter cutting off before full charge

NOTE: A lot of quality of life fixes that I should have made ages ago. The HUD is finally coming up to a "standard of quality" that I feel many users have come to expect from a custom HUD, but that KBNHud never really met before either due to my own laziness or just not paying enough attention.

  • Updated visual style of the playlist panel

  • Download size has been massively reduced

  • Fixed several issues relating to MvM HUD elements

  • MAJOR CHANGE: HUD installation is simpler now, just copy the unzipped folder directly to tf/custom.

  • Fixed several leftover issues from the previous version

  • Fixed minor positioning issues with KOTH timers in the comp/casual HUD

NOTE: Still work to be done in fixing the HUD for comp mode, would appreciate volunteer testers to help fix this.

  • Added KonrWings at long last.

  • MAJOR CHANGE: HUD now uses split scheme files a la rayshud, this is to simplify future updates on my end, readmes will be updated to reflect this.

  • Revised font titling for crosshair fonts to reflect who made them

  • Made the map time counter less obtrusive in the casual HUD given that it is now the default for all community servers.

KBNHud v435 - VGA Edition (March 29, 2018)

  • Fixed for Easter Update, will actually run the HUD when the game starts.

  • Removed file causing broken options to appear in keybinding menu

  • Added back the custom main menu background. To disable, delete KBNHud/materials/console from the installed folders.

  • Overhauled the TargetID system to fit the HUD theme better, took notes from the RaysHUD TargetID

  • Simplified the necessary commands in autoexec.cfg by moving the commands for Clovervidia's captions to a seperate .cfg in the HUD files, see the readme for what to put in your autoexec.cfg, both in the download and on the GitHub readme.

  • Made health indicators have a right justification to match ammo counter (when health is in double or single digits, it will appear closer to center)

  • Fixed tournament mode stopwatch, should no longer conflict with in-game comp mode timer and player panels

  • Fixed minor alignment issues on the scoreboards

  • Removed several unnecessary files from the HUD

NOTE: The removal of excess scripts and config files has reduced the size of the download and install, so yay for that.

NOTE: Still work to be done in fixing the HUD for comp mode, would appreciate volunteer testers to help fix this.

KBNHud v433 - Boxes Edition (February 18, 2018)

  • Reset menu image and TF2 logo to default following end of the Jungle Inferno campaign, along with other related elements

  • Fixed backgrounds on the stat panels that pop up when choosing an item in loadout screens

  • Fixed XP bar not appearing at end of match in comp/casual games, this still needs some work, but at least it appears

HOTFIX:

  • Disabled HUD crosshair that was enabled for some reason
  • Added ConTracker elements for Halloween missions

  • Added functional player destruction elements, for real this time

  • Added functional RD elements to match, even though nobody plays that, for real this time

  • Cleaned up main menu, all elements now use unified styling

  • Fixed alignment of both sets of crosshairs

  • Fixed numerous issues in the backpack and loadout screens

  • Added proper, customized meter for the Thermal Thruster

  • Fixed lingering ClientScheme issues, which solved font and color issues in the ConTracker

  • Fixed some alignment issues in Comp that messed up the round timer panels\

HOTFIX:

  • Fixed new item panel being unclickable

KBNHud v430 - Wide Edition (October 21, 2017)

  • Added new party dashboard. Invite friends from main menu, party chat is included

  • Main menu includes casual level tracker panel

  • Main menu now uses the playlist seen in the default HUD menu, as Valve deprecated the old method for the main menu to run commands

  • Changed several minor bits that will allow the HUD to work at all resolutions

  • Removed simple main menu due to deprecation of how it ran commands

  • Main menu is still left-aligned

  • Fonts in ConTracker still not working, not sure why, will investigate when not mired in class-related stuff

  • Added full support for PASS Time with customized UI elements.

  • Added full support for Mannpower mode.

  • Added preliminary support for PD and RD gamemodes, as dead as they are.

  • Added all new engineer building panels, with full transparency and reduced size of the sentry panel.

  • Updated some colors.

  • Shifted player class figure to the left to stop majority of clipping with PASS Time elements.

  • Fixed clipping of high ammocount weapons (i.e. Engy pistol) and the killstreak counter.

  • Fixed some navigation by arrow key setup on the default main menu for what few steam controller uses may pick this HUD up.

  • Fixed new team icons (eeugh) not showing up on scoreboard. Team names will also properly show up when in tournament mode and names are set by the team.

  • Changed default scoreboard to one that has no team icons, enabled by a patch made to the game, and created overrides for either the sixes or highlander boards to not have team icons (default) or to have them. Note that having the icons significantly reduces the space for competitive team names on all the boards, especially the small boards. (Hotfix 1)

  • Fixed scoreboard cutting off player names. Done by reducing space between other elements. Names will still be cut off on the sixes and highlander scoreboards due to the reduced overall width, but it is far less obnoxious than before. If the Ping value is cut off in the minmode scoreboards, disable and re-enable minmode. Did the trick for me.

  • Fixed overlapping of item meters, and in the process, standardized the design of all the item effect meters to the same style, wide and thin instead of a mix of that and thick, short ones. To tell the difference, simply remember that the order in which the meters are stacked corresponds to which weapon slot they read from. If a scout has the Soda Popper/Baby Face's Blaster, Mad Milk/Cleaver, and the Sandman/Wrap Assassin equipped, the Soda Popper/Blaster meter will be on top, Milk/Cleaver in the middle, and Sandman/Assassin at the bottom. Same for Soldier's Grordbort weapons, Focus meter over Jarate, Loose Cannon over Shield charge/Sticky carge, etc.

  • The TargetID is sorta transparent because it's opacity is now linked to a client-side (your computer) ConVar. I don't know the exact command to change the opacity as I write this, but I will find it. The Health showing above their heads will jitter and flash a crapton because of how Valve rigged it to attach to the playermodels, and when they go up stairs, it will be near impossible to read. I disagree with this change personally.
