Thoughts and results from Mozfest

Maiden Experience : MozFest 2016

I walked into MozFest with an open and guided mind.
My mind was open to meeting new people, to experiencing a new country, a new continent and more importantly to contribute to making the Web a better experience for everyone.

My guided mind was facilitating a session under the Open science theme [https://app.mozillafestival.org/#_space-open-science] and specifically focusing on citizen science. I have been interested in how we can get citizens to participate and engage with their authorities on issues that affect them. Services they consume as provided by governments and local authorities like public health and education.

My musings about the session

We discussed about how crowd sourcing can help improve citizen engagement, the opportunities and challenges. What was clear from all the participants who attended this session, was citizens needs should be at the centre of designing any crowd sourcing platform and tools. Are they able to use it? Are they incentive-zed enough to provide this information? Are they equipped with appropriate skills(digital skills for example) to utilize these tools? Do they have resources to communicate( is there good phone network,can they access internet? cyber cafes?)

While we have numerous crowd sourcing platforms especially those that utilize crowd mapping to collect data, I believe it is important to constantly evaluate these tools and their impacts, not based on our defined project outcomes, but on the experience of the citizens while interacting with them. This would help improve 'data collection' and ultimately improve engagement.

What was MozFest 2016 like for Winnie?

Other than facilitating a session, I got a chance to attend numerous brilliant sessions on different themes. I had my focus on sessions that touched on women engagement on the web, how to teach/impart/ improve acquiring knowledge on digital skills , journalism( citizen science can borrow a lot from this field), and the interesting world of bots(robots).

From my participation as a facilitator and attendee, MozFest 2016, provided me with a great opportunity to learn from other people from the world, share insights from my personal experiences with projects like the Digital Skills Observatory(DSO) in Kenya, where I come from. I also got to create new networks with people doing work that am interested in or those i would love to collaborate.

MozFest2016 crystallized for me the complex definition of what is the world wide web.!!!
