I added
DIAG_AS_CHKSUM=True
to a GMOM case and got the message

108:FATAL from PE     0: setup_tidal_diagnostics: Schmittner_coeff diagnostics is available only when CVMix_tidal_scheme is Schmittner.

It might be preferable to only register tidal mixing diagnostics that are scheme specific if the specific scheme is being used.
