I am considering using a system similar to the following examples:
https://github.com/discosultan/penumbra
I may use this mask example https://gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/38118/best-way-to-mask-2d-sprites-in-xna/38150#38150 in order to create a black rectangle covering the screen and mask the light on
