I cannot start it on a Arch Linux machine, too
hs_err_pid9515.log

This error occurs when I invoke UMLDesigner from the 8.0.0 64bit Linux binary package (btw: I cannot build from sources, too).

BUT: with my locally installed java 1.8.0_144 and taking values from UMLDesigner.ini, I am able to start it like this:

java -jar plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.4.0.v20161219-1356.jar --launcher.library plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_64_1.1.500.v20170531-1133 --launcher.XXMaxPermSize 256m -vmargs -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m

or shorter:

java `sed s/startup/jar/ UMLDesigner.ini`

Same problem here, it seems that the Zing JRE embedded with UML Designer crashes instantly:

OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM warning: ignoring option MaxPermSize=256m; support was removed in 8.0
#
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:

If I delete the jre folder, then it starts UML Designer with the JRE installed on my machine, and it works.

Same experience here with ArchLinux with the v9.0.0 downloaded from the official website (UMLDesigner-linux.gtk.x86_64.zip).

Hack from #971 (comment) allowed me to launch UMLDesigner and create a workspace, but then an error popped up and UMLDesigner crashed.

I then modified the UMLDesigner.ini file from this:

-startup
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.4.0.v20161219-1356.jar
--launcher.library
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_64_1.1.551.v20171108-1834
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
256m
-vmargs
-Xms256m
-Xmx1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m

to this:

-startup
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.4.0.v20161219-1356.jar
--launcher.library
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_64_1.1.551.v20171108-1834
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
256m
-vmargs
--add-modules=ALL-SYSTEM
-Xms256m
-Xmx1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m

So basically I just added the --add-modules=ALL-SYSTEM line.
And it now works like a charm. 😊

The original link which helped me fixing this was: https://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/t/1089060/
And in this thread, the Ed Merks user posted this link which is the real deal: https://wiki.eclipse.org/Configure_Eclipse_for_Java_9#Configure_Eclipse_for_Java_9_modules

I still can't run UMLDesigner... @ebousse's fix allows me to launch the application, but then, after the launcher asks me for the workspace location, it crashes. Adding --add-modules=ALL-SYSTEM as @cluxter proposes doesn't change anything.

The log contains this :
