It looks like the latest Mono nightlies received some better upstream support for Solaris-based distributions.
Unlike stable version 6.12,the latest 6.13 nightly already compiles to a working "mono" binary using my recipe and gmake build.
It fails at some test file written in C++ and I haven't yet found how to solve that.
