A long-standing project to translate the Bible into toki pona.

I'm interested in contributing!

That's awesome, but don't try to do it here! Come visit our Discord server and join the conversation.

For security reasons we will not be accepting pull requests outside of a few trusted individuals within the group. All other pull requests will be closed and deleted.

I'm just looking to read...

No problem! All chapter files and the fulltext file are in the directory /bible/. Also check out jan Pilipu's blog, where you can find additional commentary and notes on the translation process.

Our method

Members of our team are classed into roles:

Role Task Requirements
Translator Provide initial translations of verses Adequate knowledge of toki pona grammar, good knowledge of toki pona semantics
Proofreader Proofread translations for grammar Strong knowledge of toki pona grammar
Biblical Language Specialist Revise translations for discrepancies to source text Adequate knowledge of toki pona grammar, good knowledge of toki pona semantics, good knowledge of Koiné Greek or Biblical Hebrew
Lurker Maintain morale by hanging out and watching the Translation Crews work A pulse

The translation process begins when a Translator decides to submit an initial translation for a verse. In this situation, they navigate to the channel in the Discord server and check to see whether a thread has been opened yet for that verse. If not, the translator opens a new thread for the verse and sends their initial translation in the thread.

Upon seeing that a new initial translation has been put forth, a Proofreader and an appropriate Biblical Language Specialist join the thread to revise the translation, forming a Translation Crew. The Biblical Language Specialist makes sure that the translation matches the original text as closely as possible, while the Proofreader makes sure that the translation is understandable according to toki pona grammar.

Once a translation has been approved and sealed by a Translator, a Proofreader, and an appropriate Biblical Language Specialist, it is finalised. Finalised verses are periodically added to the repo by trusted individuals.
