Summary

There's a lot of great speakers in the Rochester area or people who might be willing to travel to come out and speak. Let's try to have some interesting guest speakers this semester!

Explanation

I have a better understanding than before on how expansive the network of talented tech people around Rochester is. While I don't think we're at a place where we could try to attract speakers by covering travel costs, I think there's a small radius of people that we could reach out to for various topics, and if they do need to travel, it would hopefully be a drivable distance or line up with a pre-planned trip to Rochester.

Current candidates

There's a few people I had lined up for inviting as guest speakers depending on their availability. Some I have pinned for special topics, others it depends on what they would want to talk about.

  • Charles Profitt (Linux / Ubuntu / Fedora / general sysadmin)
  • Remy DeCausemaker (Open source at Twitter)
  • Ryan S. Brown (Ansible)
  • InfluxData (have some leads I want to follow up there)
  • Local Mozillians (maybe @Nolski or @mattBernius could help connect us)
  • Nextcloud (remote speakers?)
  • Arch Women (possible speakers in the area)

For the people I have names for, I want to send invites out after the first week of the semester, when we have time to figure things out a bit on the ground. For now, this is a low priority ticket, but later, it will become high priority so we can try to figure out peoples' schedules.

Hey, I'm happy to help.

Currently there are three official local Mozillians (I'm unofficial). I can connect you with John Karahalis who is an RIT grad and was part of some of the early Open Source activities on campus along side Remy.

@RITlug/eboard: I just got word that @bacharakis from Mozilla is going to be swinging by Rochester on Sept. 22nd! Ideally, we could have him do a guest session once I hear more about ideas he would like to present on.

@Nolski That would be cool. What kind of subject areas would he be a good fit for? Do you have any contact info you could give us? If you do, feel free to zap it at ritlug@gmail.com!

@jflory7 lonnen was my manager at mozilla. He's been around for quite a while and im sure has at least a few open source stories to tell. Even just hearing about the lesser known stories about mozilla would be cool. His email is lonnen@mozilla.com I think. Github is https://github.com/lonnen/

As an update: I've reached out to Charles Profitt and Ryan S. Brown (Ansible) for guest speaking. Charles will be present in December and will also return in spring for another talk. I haven't heard back from Ryan yet, but he acknowledged the email in IRC and said he'd get back with me.

Nobody has reached out to lonnen yet. It's on my list.

I'm going to close this ticket with the end of the semester. While it's not technically "done", it also is a type of task that can never truly be done either. We'll focus on guest speaker outreach as we build our itinerary for next semester!
