The plan was to fix #128, which I did. However, this turned out to be more of a docs cleanup pull request in general. In short, I converted all the code snippets to doctests, so they'll never go stale. I also added a proper ValueError for the checklist issue in #128. Things are even setup for the change I'd like to make in #127.
