Items Tested:
LV CEF 16x, LV CEU 16x, 16-slot LV Battery Buffer, Small Cadmium Batteries, Basic Flux Capacitor, Creative Energy Cell

Relevant mod versions:

  • CEU 1.0.5.1
  • GTCE 1.12.1.669
  • Thermal Expansion 5.5.7.1

Placing a CEF with an empty Small Cadmium Battery and empty Basic Flux Capacitor in Charge & Discharge mode, then providing RF to the CEF using a Creative Energy cell results in the CEF's internal buffer filling up, but batteries not charging at all. This differs from prior versions where batteries act as additional internal storage that will be charged up with net energy input and drained during periods of net energy output. It will however still transfer energy from the internal buffer to connected machines, so that much remains usable.

This mode has other quirks: placing a CEF pointing into to a battery buffer in Charge & Discharge mode will, as expected, drain batteries of both GTEU and FE types into the Battery Buffer. Pointing a battery buffer into a CEU in the same modes will fill the CEU's internal buffer but will not charge the batteries inside it.

Pointing a CEF directly into a CEU (or connecting via cables) in Charge & Discharge mode will result in no transfer of energy to the CEU past its internal buffer. Only when batteries are set to exclusively charge within the CEU does it transfer energy into the batteries.

In both the CEU and CEF, setting one type of battery to charge and the other to discharge transfers energy between the two battery types inside of it. This is a deviation from past behavior, but I guess this makes some sense for moving energy between batteries and chargeable items.

Charge & Discharge mode thing is definitely not normal. No idea why it works like that. I will work on it.

And the last part is intended, yes.

New version approved in Curseforge. Let me know if there's another funny shenanigans I don't know of.

Thank you for your rapid response, I apologize for the delay in replying. I have retried the same things I was doing before with 1.0.5.2 and it is now working in a way that makes sense.

I have noticed some behaviors with batteries that strike me as a bit odd given my configs but I will open a new ticket for that.
