Welcome to the UCF WordPress Theme wiki! This documentation is intended for anyone adding content to a site with this theme activated, and for developers that maintain sites using it.

This documentation assumes a basic understanding of WordPress and how to create and manage content. If you're new to WordPress, please take the time to familiarize yourself with the basics until you're comfortable with using the admin interface.

About this theme

The UCF WordPress Theme is a WordPress theme developed by UCF Web Communications, intended for use as a baseline branded theme or the foundation for a child theme.

This theme is built using the Athena Framework, a front-end web framework that provides mobile-first responsive styles tailored to UCF's brand guidelines. We strongly recommend that both content editors and developers familiarize themselves with the Athena Framework to better understand this theme and how to style content using it.

Project goals

This theme was built to provide a consistent look+feel and user experience for UCF websites, and to provide a common foundation of templates and logic for child themes. It's designed to be used as-is, but is also heavily extensible and overridable for those that need something more custom. Many functions within the theme are pluggable, or include custom actions and filters usable by child themes or plugins to modify how some functions behave.

Should I use this theme on my site?

This theme is not built for any specific website--it is suitable for use on front-facing department, organization, or other generic university websites, and is capable of being used on a wide range of projects. That being said, do keep in mind UCF's brand guidelines for web and ask yourself if this theme, or WordPress in general, is an appropriate solution for your needs.

If your site requires custom templates or style modifications that aren't already provided in the UCF WordPress Theme, you should develop a dependent child theme that includes the additional templates, logic, and/or styles that you require.
