Morrowind needs mp3 support. For example on my Arch install to run Morrowind I need to install lib32-mpg123 On Ubuntu I think it is apt-get install libmpg123-0:i386

@m-svo okay, I will try it out later. Thanks!
Update: i installed this library and problem solved now for me. Should i close this issue now?

@omicron-b
Copy link

@arzardk probably no, we should wait if Valve will decide to add this library to Steam or not. It`s a 32bit library, so maybe there is a chance of it not being available from repos in future, or not being available in some distros at all.

For me game works (Debian Stretch / NVidia 390.77 / KDE) but it turns out that some textures are completely messed up.

@omicron-b

@jaubin did you try verifying integrity of game files? Also (sorry for that question) are you using any mods?

Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
  • Steam AppID of the game: 22320

System Information

  • GPU: GTX 1060
  • Driver/LLVM version: nvidia 396.54
  • Kernel version: 4.15
  • Link to full system information report as Gist
  • Proton version: 3.7-3 and 3.7-6 Beta

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

steam-22320-flicker.log

Symptoms

  1. as @jaubin noted, textures on roads sometimes briefly changes to grass. In the mountains, the stone sometimes briefly change color. It depends on the character position, so does not happen when it does not move.
    2) on Mint 18.3, trying to open Settings - Video crashes the game. - this is fixed by reinstalling

20180912215752_1

Reproduction

  1. travel to Balmora, go to the nearest Fort or to the mountains nearby

Note

I actually have a fresh Debian Stretch system, and issue 1 exists there too, with kernel 4.9 and driver 384.130. Issue 2 however can not be reproduced on my Debian and Arch (4.18, nvidia nvidia 396.54)

Game now works for me with Steam beta client without lib32-mpg123 / libmpg123-0:i386 on Arch and Debian.

Looks like terrain flicker is gone with Proton 4.2-1
@jaubin can you try it?

Hello @nickgrier07, we're using one issue report per unofficially supported game title, and it's not clear if you're referring to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Please add your experience to the corresponding issue report. Also, adding PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and drag and dropping the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log into the comment box of one of those issue reports may have a hint as to what's happening.

@nickgrier07 commented on 2019-07-18T23:47:54:

@kisak-valve that issue report doesn't corrispond to my experance.

It has nothing to do with the menu, it has to do with the game itself. If you want a catch all for Morrowind issues, then close that one, and make a new one, cause otherwise it's just confusing.

I'll see what i can do about that log thing.

I find this games works well even in Wine 4.0.1 but I cannot get the MGE XE mod to work in it which is a great mod that makes the game look modern and not old. The Morrowind Code patch mod also works fine with no issues.

Also the Contruction Set which I know is not included in the steam version has some issues, such as when your editing an object position the value always get set to some huge integer.

I did find this on Morrowind and MGE. This may help on fixing the MGE issue.

Morrowind - MGE XE Mod Not Integrating Into Morrowind

Issue transferred from #3193.
@trymeouteh posted on 2019-11-05T18:12:21:

Compatibility Report

  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
  • 22320

System Information

  • Proton version:4.2-9

The popular MGE XE mod does not work in Proton nor does it work in Wine. The only thing from MGE XE that seems to work is the high resolution as I am able to set the games resolution to 1920x1080 when the game without MGE XE only supports up to 1024x768.

The distant land wizard crashes during distand land generation, but not only that many other MGE components do not integrate into the game such as the 3rd person camera position angle, MWSE support.

This following log file is a test showing you MGE XE does not work and when I try to load a game using a mod that uses MWSE, an error occurs saying the mod does not work due to MWSE not being present in the game.

The Wine bug report has gotten MGE XE to mostly work in Wine for the retail version of Morrowind, I did do the exact same treaks to the Morrowind Steam version and I got MGE XE to work! Except the game seems to crash after 2-5 minutes unlike the retail version in Wine.

Here is the Proton log.

At a glance, the logs indicate that the game would benefit from quartz/strmbase maturing. In the second log it ran into wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7d2d5f67 (thread 0031), starting debugger...

It's unlikely to make a difference at this point, but is there any particular reason you were testing with Proton 4.2 instead of 4.11?

@trymeouteh
Copy link

Is Proton 4.11 newer than 4.2?

I have 4.2 set as my default Proton version for all of my Steam games. I can give 4.11 a try.

@trymeouteh

It will seem from some testing that 4.11 works and will no longer cause the crash unlike 4.2

Hello, is anyone seeing an issue with this game and Proton 4.11 that would block it from being whitelisted?

For some reason my Steam won`t update Proton past 4.11-11, but I suppose changelog for 4.11-12 is not relevant for this game.

System Information

  • GPU: GTX 1060
  • Driver/LLVM version: NVIDIA 440.44
  • Distro version: Arch Linux

No issues at all. Deleted lib32-mpg123 from system before testing.

Thanks @mk011, at this point mesa 20.3.5 is three release branches behind current and not supported by upstream mesa devs anymore. Ideally, I'd like to wait for Sid to unfreeze itself and bump mesa to a current release before seeing if the mesa/RADV mesa/radeonsi devs would be interested in taking a look (or otherwise build mesa yourself, which might be a headache).

@kisak-valve, I retested with openSUSE Tumbleweed that has Mesa 21.1.6 and the lighting issue is still present.

Screenshot_20210818_205955

Also another issue cropped up where the in-game music track keeps changing every couple of seconds instead of being played out and then changing like it's supposed to.
