VFP Brewing

As of: mc1.12.2-4.2.0 (May-2018)

VFP adds a few items and a new craft-technique to your brewing pantry. Most new items are substitute ingredients or reactants but some let you create new custom potions blends. You can brew most of the new blends with either Awkward potion or Thick potion as a base; this allows you to brew our potions with glowstone dust or an equivalent, like SuperBlock's Luminesce, instead of nether warts.

The new craft-technique lets you combine existing potions into a new item called a "Moonshine Potion" or tonic. Moonshine tonics (and the related Bootleg Gelo) are stackable and you can customize their coloring so each blend easily identified in your hotbar or player inventory. Read Moonshine Potions for more information.

Table of Contents

You can disable all of the mod's brewing extensions and recipes by setting the potions_enabled configuration option to false. Note that you will still be subject to food poisioning effects if you eat certain foods. To disable the crafting recipes for moonshine potions and bootleg gelos (which does not depend on our potions specifically), disable the moonshine_mixing_enabled configuration option.

Item Substitutions

Potion of The Ocean Deep

Potion of The Ocean Deep, also called Water Dweller's potion, is brewed with Ink Pearl Fragments, a new VFP drop from squid. When consumed, it gives you both night vision and water breathing effects for deep water exploring and ocean build construction. Ink Fragments are pretty easy to obtain and using them saves you lots of golden carrots!

==> Potion Effects Squid

You can brew the Water Dweller's potion with awkward potion or thick potion as a base. To create the longer-lasting version of the potion, add either a single redstone dust or another ink pearl fragment to a base potion.

Potion of Bear's Spirit I+II

Potion of Bear's Spirit is brewed from a crafted Polar Crystal. To craft a polar crystal you need one Polar Crystal Heart, a new VFP drop from adult polar bears. Naturally spawned polar bears are uncommon so it's difficult to obtain crystal hearts in quantities. However, if you have the PinklySheep mod installed, you can breed polar bears with salmon making the task a bit easier. Very rarely, you can find a crystal heart in an igloo loot chest.

Crafting Polar Crystal

Bear's Spirit is like a personal protective damage shield in a bottle. When consumed, it gives you the attack qualities of a grown polar bear-- bascially you become one strong mean fighting machine, able to take and give lots o' pain. If you're the kind of player who likes to go hostile mob hunting the "old fashioned way" (i.e. running around in the middle of a desert at night yelling "Bring It!"), this is the potion for you.

==> Potion Effects Bear

You can brew Bear's Spirit with either awkward potion or thick potion as a base. To make the stronger, longer-lasting Bear's Spirit II potion you must react another Polar Crystal with a base Bear's Spirit potion; neither glowstone dust nor redstone dust will work. Trust us, the extra work for that 2nd crystal is worth it. Don't forget your Looting III sword!

Potion of Wolf's Spirit I+II

Potion of Wolf's Spirit is brewed from a crafted Wolf's Spirit item. To craft wolf's spirit you need a Wolf Spirit Essence item, a new VFP drop from adult wolves. Tamed wolves will very rarely drop the spirit essence item. If you're serious about making this potion, you'll need to hunt untamed wolves.

Crafting Wolf Spirit Item (Note: essence comes in 3 colors which all work the same)

Wolf's Spirit potion is all about the hunt, usually for other players in PvP games. When consumed, it gives you great stealth and speed for pursuit or, in a pinch, to get the heck out of a bad situation fast! If playing in the Nether dimension, combine with a fire resistance potion and you're good to go.

==> Potion Effects Wolf

Like other VFP's potion blends, you can brew Wolf's Spirit with either awkward potion or thick potion as a base. To make Wolf's Spirit II potion brew any Wolf Spirit Essence item with a base Wolf's Spirit potion; redstone dust will not work.

Potion of Undying

Potion of Undying is brewed from a crafted Phoenix Feather item and Goood JuJu potion. To create a phoenix feather you need three(3) Felis Life Essence items and three special feathers. VFP's own Colored Feather is considered a special feather as is PinklySheep's parrot feathers and Animania's or Exotic Bird's peacock feathers.

Crafting Phoenix Feather -or-

When you drink an undying potion, your damage resistance is increased five-fold, making you invincible to standard game mob damage for the duration of the effect. As there is no way to predict how modded hostile mobs affect a player, you'll just have to give the potion a try in a controlled situation (as "controlled" as any hostile encounter can be) and see if it helps. At worse, the undying potion should reduce the damage you take significantly. To make a longer lasting potion, brew a single Felis Life Essence into the standard Undying potion.

==> Potion Effects Undying

Warning: The potion of undying contains standard Minecraft effects-- so drinking a regular bucket of milk while it's active will remove all these effects immediately! Instead of a bucket of milk, drink a bottle of milk or better yet, a bottle of Muscle Milk. These two items will remove only negative potion effects, and leave ones like damage resistance and luck unchanged.

Potion Miscellanea

Food Poisoning

Food "poison" is an effect that combines nausea (confusion) and hunger but does NOT actually poison you. In Survival mode you cannot brew a drinkable food poison potion. Instead, you fall victim to food poisoning by eating certain foods like raw polar bear meat or raw wrapped eggs. Basically for stuff you really shouldn't eat unless it's a choice between death and possible food poisoning. The effect will typically last no longer than 1 minute.

Raw Caffeine

Drinkable Raw Caffeine is brewed from Caffeine Mush. When consumed, raw caffeine gives you a big 60% speed boost but it also poisons you. You can brew this stimulant with either plain water or awkward potion. Raw caffeine comes in a single strength and its speed buff duration is 3 minutes (the poison lasts for a much shorter time); you cannot further boost the base potion's strength or duration.

Tip: For a weaker but longer-lasting speed boost without the poison, try some Golden Sugar instead.

Goood and Baaad JuJu

Goood JuJu is our long-lasting variant for the standard Minecraft Luck potion which has no brew recipe in Survival mode. To brew some Luck potion, react a single Flower-Power powder with Awkward potion. To convert that Luck potion into Goood JuJu for double-the-luck, add another Flower-Power powder.

Brewing Some Goood JuJu

Baaad JuJu is the undoer of luck, i.e. the standard Minecraft UnLuck potion (which is actually the same as a Luck potion but with negative values). To get some baaad juju potion, add a Fermented Feather or Fermented Spider Eye to a Luck potion.

Brewing Some Baaad JuJu

The Sugar Bomb

The "sugar bomb effect" is what you get when you consume the potion created by a Golden Sugar. Basically it's a supercharged sugar rush without the negative effects a caffeine potion has. Because a golden sugar rush is all encompassing, this potion includes buffs for movement speed, haste or mining and attack speed, as well as jumping. Note that these potions provide the same effects you'd get if you just eat the golden sugar directly; however, the effect's duration is much shorter with the potion than it would be with the sugar item.
