Already with some advanced situations I'm running into cases where more than one implementation per typesetter might make sense. For example SILE might have a SIL or an XML input variant, or Groff might have variants for the manuscript or mom macro sets. Nevermind that there are always at least ten different packages to accomplish the same thing in LaTeX...
