Welcome to the knotfree.net wiki!

knotfree.net is a tool to help hobbyists and sometimes other people to create 'things' that can be controlled by phone or computer.

In order to obtain the best results for users knotfree is also handing out 'internet names' aka Domain Names on a provisional basis. These are (or will be) usable in all the usual ways. ie email, web servers, etc and now IOT devices.

Here is an example of an IOT thermometer that has a 'name'. http://a-thermometer-demo.xyz/get/f

The things can be sent commands from:

  1. A Serial Monitor/Terminal (which never requires encryption).
  2. The local wifi network by HTTP eg yourthinglongname.knotfree.net
  3. By HTTP at knotfree.net eg yourthing.local.
  4. Via MQTT where the Topic Name is the long name of the device.
  5. Via an internet name that you own. Eg. a-thermometer-demo.xyz

The dashboard is at knotfree.net. It's very nearly free. I don't even need to ask for your email for you to use it. It's about $0.002 per month to use. If you would be so kind as to follow me on Twitter then I will give you free 'tokens' for use by yourself or others. These 'tokens' are worth as much as a penny! Remember, it's knot free but nearly so.

The whole shebang is open source so, unlike other IOT providers anyone can see how it works. You could use it to create your own thing!

I tell an ongoing story about how to make the internet better at Twitter
