Describe the Feature

An individual on Bluesky has pointed out that they are receiving gore/self harm imagery through DMs that cannot be avoided. Images are not currently available in DMs, but there is a workaround. The harasser posts an image on Bluesky (or on another website, possibly) and then links the post in someone's open DMs. This produces an image preview that is automatically shown. The harassed user is receiving gore/self harm imagery in this way from the harasser.

The suggestion would be to automatically blur, or otherwise hide / not generate, the image preview associated with embedded posts / links in DMs. Perhaps this feature could be limited only to users that the recipient does not follow / are not mutuals.

Here is an example of how the harassment strategy works (substitute this benign image for gore/self harm imagery). The sender simply pastes a link to a post and the embedded image is automatically generated. There is no way not to see it without knowing the contents of the message beforehand.

Describe Alternatives

Instead of blurring the image, it may be easiest to simply not generate image previews in DMs, either for all users or from senders that you do not follow.
