Reliability Engineer Cheatsheet

Hope is not a strategy.

Introduction

Framework for performing a complete check of system health, database administration, performance benchmarks, and documentation links.

Target audience: DevOps, SRE, System Administrators, and everyone who is on duty.

Linux Performance Analysis

System

dmesg | tail # OOM killer?

CPU

List processes sorted by % cpu usage:

ps -e -o pcpu,cpu,nice,state,cputime,args --sort pcpu | tail

System utilization:

uptime # check resource demand

# a summary of system-wide utilization
vmstat 1 # Swapping?

# CPU time breakdowns per CPU
mpstat -P ALL 1 # A single hot CPU can be evidence of a single-threaded application

# top’s per-process summary
pidstat 1 # check the patterns over time

Memory

List processes sorted by mem (KB) usage:

ps -e -orss=,args= | sort -b -k1,1n | tail

Memory usage:

free -m

Disk

System utilization:

df -h # are file systems nearly full?

# disks performance
iostat -xnz 1 # any disk IO? no? good

# current number of open files from the Linux kernel's point of view
cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr

Investigate root directory for disk usage:

# This command will only show folders with more than 1GB in size
sudo du --threshold=1G -ch /.[!.]* /*

Network

List of TCP and UDP port numbers

Check connection statistics (source):

curl -w "DNS: %{time_namelookup}\nTCP: %{time_connect}\nTLS: %{time_appconnect}\nTotal: %{time_total}\n" -o /dev/null -s https://example.net/test

Verify hostname resolution:

dig +trace myhost.com

Verify TCP/UDP port accessibility:

telnet localhost 5672 # TCP
nc -v localhost 25 # TCP
nc -uv localhost 53 # UDP

Inspect open ports, TCP and UDP connections:

sudo netstat --all --numeric --tcp --programs

sudo netstat -pan | grep TIME_WAIT | wc -l # how many TIME_WAIT ?

# display OS processes that listen on port 5672 and use IPv4
sudo lsof -n -i4TCP:5672 | grep LISTEN

# display listening TCP sockets that use IPv4 and their OS processes
sudo ss --tcp -f inet --listening --numeric --processes 

lsof -ni TCP:3306 | awk '{print $2}' | uniq -c

Inspect network IO and TCP stats:

# network interface throughput
sar -n DEV 1 # check if any limit has been reached

# key TCP metrics
# Retransmits are a sign of a network or server issue. Unreliable network or a server being overloaded?
sar -n TCP,ETCP 1

Getting System Information

lsb_release -a

# In case when you don't have lsb_release installed:
cat /etc/issue
# or look at
cat /etc/*release

# get information about your operating system using unix name:

uname -a

CPU information:

lscpu
# or
cat /proc/cpuinfo
# or just the number of cores
grep -c processor /proc/cpuinfo

In PSQL shell:

Check DB size:

Check the number of connections:

Show all running queries:

Check pgBouncer state:

psql -p 6432 pgbouncer # Only users listed in the configuration parameters admin_users or stats_users are allowed to log in
SHOW STATS

Postgres Dump / Backup

Quick snippet for PG backup:

# dump whole db
pg_dump -Fc --schema='public' --exclude-table='excl.table' -h <host> -U <user> -W -v <db> > db.dump.$(date +%F) # dump a database into a custom-format archive

# dump one table with plane sql
pg_dump --host <host> --port 5432 --username <user> --format plain --verbose --file "/tmp/dump.table.sql" --table public.<table> <db_name>

pg_restore -d newdb db.dump # reload an archive file into a (freshly created) database named newdb

Default options are read from the following files in the given order:

MySQL perfomance checklist

This query will list the size of every table in every database, largest first:

SELECT 
     table_schema as `Database`, 
     table_name AS `Table`, 
     round(((data_length + index_length) / 1024 / 1024), 2) `Size in MB` 
FROM information_schema.TABLES 
ORDER BY (data_length + index_length) DESC;

Server Status, connections and running queries:

show global status;

show status where `variable_name` = 'Threads_connected'; -- The number of currently open connections.

show processlist; -- running queries

The mysqlcheck client performs table maintenance: it checks, repairs, optimizes, or analyzes tables. Official Documentation

# Run mysqlcheck with the root user, prompt for a password check all databases
mysqlcheck -u root -p --all-databases --auto-repair -a # analyze
mysqlcheck -u root -p --all-databases --auto-repair -r # repair
mysqlcheck -u root -p --all-databases --auto-repair -o # optimize

MySQL dump / backup

Quick snippet for MySQL backup:

mysqldump -u <user> -p <password> -h <host> --quick --single-transaction --databases db1 --result-file=db-backup-$(date +%F).sql 
# option --single-transaction sets the transaction isolation mode to REPEATABLE READ and sends a START TRANSACTION SQL statement to the server before dumping data 
mysql db1 < dump.sql

Usually configuration file is called redis.conf.

Config file location:

redis-cli info server | grep config_file # usually /etc/redis.conf

Log file location:

cat /etc/redis/redis.conf | grep logfile # usually /var/log/redis-server.log or /var/log/redis_6379.log

Check Redis state:

redis-cli info # Complete info including network, CPU, memory, persistence and cluster settings
redis-cli monitor # Warning: Because MONITOR streams back all commands, its use comes at a cost

redis-cli client list # returns information and statistics about the client connections
redis-cli dbsize # the number of keys in the currently-selected database. New connections always use the database 0.

Consumers Troubleshooting

Clone kafka tools from Kafka Source Code (kafka/bin dir).

Check Kafka Cluster availability. Maybe cluster is down or unreachable within a network?

curl -skv telnet://<broker address>:<broker port>

Check how many consumers are in a group. Maybe Kafka kicked them by a time-out, or they are stuck.

# Make sure the number of consumers is greater than zero 

kafka-consumer-groups.sh --describe --group mygroup --bootstrap-server mycluster:9092

Describe the topic and check the number of partitions. Maybe the number of consumers is higher than the number of partitions?

# Make sure the number of partitions in topic < the number of consumers

kafka-topics.sh --describe --zookeeper myzk:2181 --topic mytopic

Check the lag on a consumer group. Maybe consumers are stuck on some message?

# Make sure the lag on topic for consumer group tends to zero 
kafka-consumer-groups.sh --bootstrap-server mycluster:9092 --describe --group mygroup 

Is cluster down? Check Kafka's logs at:

$KAFKA_HOME/kafka/logs/
/var/log/kafka
