Welcome to the umbracoMono wiki! This is the new home for the umbraco Mono port previously found at https://github.com/cankoluman/umbraco-mono

What is Umbraco?

Umbraco is probably the best CMS that is available on the planet at this point in time. It is easy to customise, highly flexible, and possesses an intuitive user interface. Umbraco is developer friendly, and consequently offers a CMS tool that can produce great results for end-users and CMS editors / admins.

Ironically enough, up to now, Umbraco was only available to Windows users. The aim of the mono port is to bring Umbraco to a wide community, in particular to Unix, Linux, and Darwin (OSX) based systems; or in general, to any system which is capable of running mono.

The present (master) branch ports Umbraco 4.7.2 - which is a well known stable release in the Umbracoverse. Porting applications across platforms is a delicate procedure fraught with subtle pitfalls. The use of a well-known milestone (version 4.7.2) helps us to minimise any inadvertent bugs due to platform differences. In this port, we have done the absolute minimum amount of re-coding required, and no more.

For the version 4.7.2 port, another aim has been to stay as close to the Windows version as is possible. However, the next port, will see a departure in that policy, and I am likely to abandon Windows compatibility (as a Windows version already exists), and focus solely on a mono port.

The present beta-1 release is geared towards developers with some knowledge of mono, monodevelop, and Linux. However, an end-user friendly version is in the works.
