https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 lists MP3 as and open and free format and it's been a while meaning that browsers widely support this format. The https://caniuse.com/ site shows how mp3 is better supported than ogg or wav: https://caniuse.com/?search=mp3 https://caniuse.com/?search=ogg https://caniuse.com/?search=wav It also is the format picked by Firefox and Chromium in my tests.
